On August 20th 1979, a nervous 18 year old pushed on the door of Hamilton & Inches. At the same time, on the other side, the doorman pulled open the door, and the innocent youth came stumbling into the shop in an inelegant sprawl of arms and legs. I’ve been here ever since. So now, many years later, I feel reasonably qualified to try to identify what makes “H&I” H&I. We’re not just a shop that sells jewellery, we are jewellers. It’s personal. We never forget that people are bringing their emotions through our door: love, joy, excitement and hope. It’s our responsibility as a jeweller to respect this and absolutely make sure our customers get the best advice, as well as the best quality.
I firmly believe jewellery is made to be worn, not locked away and only brought out for red-letter days. Every girl should have a pair of single stone diamond earrings as part of her jewellery wardrobe. They’ll look just as good with jeans and a t-shirt as they do with a ballgown; versatility is key. Nobody should leave disappointed, whether they’re looking for classic jewellery or contemporary pieces from design stars like Stephen Webster and Chrissie Douglas.
Also, having our own workshops means we can create our own distinctive items. Today the level of skills we have at our disposal is a major part of the business. And we are recognised as a leading authority in contemporary table silver.
Our people have H&I running through their veins. They bring enjoyment as well as knowledge to the whole thrilling experience of choosing jewellery, watches and silver. As for the future? I’d like to see more young folk coming through our doors. I get huge satisfaction when a 21-year-old comes in looking for a gift. They may be a wee bit hesitant and may only have £60 to spend. But I can make sure they walk out of the shop with an H&I bag containing a specially wrapped gift for just £50. It’ll be as valuable to them as something costing a great deal more.
This emphasises a vital ingredient in the H&I DNA. Our customers.
We couldn’t exist without their loyal support and I’m lucky enough to count many of them as close friends. So thank you all for your continued custom. I hope you enjoy looking through this brochure and we look forward to welcoming you to Hamilton & Inches.
