Introduced at Baselworld 2016, the new Rolex Air-King is a fresh and retro take on the aeronautical heritage of the original Rolex Oyster. The unique and aviation-inspired aesthetics are exceptionally stylish and very appealing – making it one of the most talked about models this year.
The 40mm steel case has a magnetic shield and a distinctive black dial, featuring large numerals and a prominent minutes scale for navigational time readings. The dial displays the name ‘Air-King’ in the same lettering designed especially for the model in the 1950s, as well as a green and yellow Rolex logo - its first appearance on a dial. The seconds hand is also green - the emblematic colour of the Rolex brand.
AN HOMAGE TO AVIATION
The new Rolex Air-King epitomises Rolex’s privileged ties with the aeronautical world during its golden age in the 1930s. One of the pioneers of this era, English aviator Charles Douglas Barnard, set a number of flight records. Of the Rolex Oyster, he said: “The peculiar qualities of this Rolex watch render it eminently suitable for flying purposes and I propose to use it on all my long-distance flights in the future.” The new Rolex Air-King pays tribute to the pioneers of flight and the Rolex Oyster’s role in the epic story of aviation.
Like all Rolex watches, each Rolex Air-King is fitted with a COSC certified chronometer – a successfully and thoroughly tested self-winding mechanical movement – and is certified to perform at a superlative level as a fully assembled watch. The superlative certification assessment conditions exclusive to Rolex exceed those of watchmaking norms and simulate real-life watch wearing, giving a more representative experience to guarantee performance on the wrist.
